The furnace runs and runs, the thermostat says the house is warm, and the corner of the room where you actually sit is cold. The bill comes anyway, for heat you never get to feel, and it is leaving through gaps nobody showed you.

That is not your fault. Your bill says how much you used and what they charged. It never says where the heat went.

One real house
A 748-square-foot house in Mystic, Connecticut. The owner thought the electric bills were too high. A technician found the leaks with a blower door and sealed them in one visit, no major renovation. Estimated saving: about three hundred fifty dollars a year. She said the house felt less drafty.
That comes from the contractor's own published case study: it is an estimate on a professional job, she is not a buyer of this manual, and your house will differ. It is the same kind of job as the first chapter, done by a professional instead of with a caulk gun.

A dash in the cost column means that line has nothing to buy: finding a leak takes a look at the meter, not a purchase.
This book will not total its own savings, and neither will this page. Forty-two of the chapters open with a savings line, and thirteen of those say plainly that no source measured the saving. They are not the same kind of number: some are dollars a year, some are a percent of a bill this book cannot see, some are a season, some are a purchase you skip once. Adding them would give you a bigger number and a worse book. The first chapter of the Money section explains why, at length.
What the arithmetic can do is set the scale you are working against. The Energy Information Administration forecast that a household heating with natural gas would spend about $642 on it over the 2025-26 November-to-March winter, and one heating with oil about $1,390; the average monthly residential electric bill in 2024 was $142.26. Those are the Energy Information Administration’s figures, not ours. Your fuel, your winter and your walls set your own.
How you can check every number
Every chapter’s numbers carry their sources, listed in the chapter. The manual cites 843 references drawn from 716 distinct claims, read from 53 websites: federal and state agencies, university extension services, a few professional and industry bodies, and two retail chains, which are used only for prices. On September 26, 2026 we opened every one of the 340 source addresses behind those claims, and corrected any that had moved.
Of the 33 chapters that quote a retail price, 33 name the store and the date the price was read. Prices move; that is exactly why the date is printed beside them. And of 95 retail claims checked, not one is used to support a health effect.

It does not promise your bill will fall by any particular amount. It cannot see your house. Every percentage in it is a national figure laid over a bill we have never read.
It will not make the month it does not work go away. A utility bill is two numbers multiplied: how much you used, and what they charged for it. You can change the first and still get a higher bill, because the second moved. That is common enough that one of the four sheets exists for nothing else.
If anything in your house burns fuel and vents up a chimney, the first chapter has a heating technician check its draft first; this page's arithmetic leaves that visit out.
